Hairy woodpecker in snow

This is a hairy woodpecker, which I see almost daily in my backyard. This is a great example of how I like to capture a bit of a bird’s personality in my photos, especially when I am photographing the more common species. This was taken in February 2021, when we had a lot of snow one day. This guy popped up from under the snow on top of my deck railing, a bit like a Jack-in-a-box. He seemed surprised to see so much snow! I think this image is whimsical and makes a nice change from the standard images of woodpeckers on tree trunks or at my suet feeder. I love how you can see the detail of the snowflakes and the hair on its chin.
